Workshop on solid waste management held

NAGAON, May 15: A day long workshop on solid waste management was organised at Dhing College by Assam Science Technology and Environment in collaboration with Eco Club, Dhing College in special support of Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Govt of India.

The primary aim of the workshop was to educate students and provide them with holistic understanding of Solid Waste Management (SWM) issues, ill effects of wrong practices of SWM, best practices of SWM and importance of proper sanitation as well as sowing awareness of good practices on solid waste management, wastewater treatment, livelihoods, and public-private partnerships to gain knowledge in sustainable waste and environmental management system. Understand different types of waste, their handling, storage, disposal requirements, and their potential effect on the environment.

The workshop was inaugurated by Dr Biman Hazarika, principal of the college. While addressing the occasion, Dr Hazarika highlighted solid waste and the need as well as the importance of its management. A handbook on solid waste management penned by Dr Sanjeeb Kumar Nath was inaugurated by Dr Biman Hazarika as well. Dr Sanjeeb Kumar Nath, co-ordinator of Eco Club, elucidated the workshop’s objectives.

Following the inaugural session, technical sessions were initiated in which over 135 participants including students, faculty members, resource persons from 14 High Schools, ME schools, Eco-Club as deputed by IS and BEEO of Nagaon, participated in the workshop here.

Dr Pradeep Baishya, associate professor, Mechanical Engineering Department, AEC Jalukbari, Guwahati, Dr Farista Yasmin, associate professor & HOD, department of Botany, Nowgong College (Autonomous), Nagaon, Dr Ajit Debnath, associate professor & HOD, department of economics, Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev Vishwavidyalaya, Binita Baishya, proprietor, Eco Waste Management, Guwahati, attended the event as the resource persons in the technical sessions of the workshop, said in a press note here.
