JORHAT, July 16: Dr Mridul Chandra Sarmah, a retired senior scientist of the Central Silk Board in Lahdoigarh, Jorhat, passed away on Sunday at a private hospital in Kolkata. The 63-year-old scientist succumbed to post-operative complications. Dr Sarmah, a resident of the Tarajan locality in Jorhat, was not only known for his contributions in the field of sericulture but was also a renowned writer.
Dr Sarmah authored several notable works, including a book titled ‘Xonali Xotar Xopun,’ which is said to be the first Assamese novel on muga (silk) and ericulture (silk farming). He also wrote a book on sports and had more than 60 research papers published in various journals.
His demise has deeply saddened the community in Jorhat and beyond. Dr Sarmah leaves behind his wife, son, and numerous relatives. His contributions to the field of sericulture and his literary works will be remembered and cherished by many.
