SIVASAGAR, May 9: Chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has directed Sivasagar deputy commissioner Megha Nidhi Dahal to inquire about the mischief behind the removal of the Shivling and the icon of the Nandi from the sanctum sanctorum of the famous Siva temple built during the days of Ahom Queen Ambika alias Modambika, the second consort of Swargadeu Siva Singha in the 18th century. The principal private secretary to the chief minister of Assam, through a letter on Friday informed the Sivasagar deputy commissioner about the matter with a copy of the memorandum from the group of senior citizens of the town.
A group of senior citizens of the town sent a memorandum to the chief minister imploring him to stop the sacrilegious act of removing the age-old Shivling and marble icon of Nandi while Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) workers were engaged in removing the modern tiles and marble floors only as part of the ongoing preservation works. At the same time, the same people cut down and uprooted almost all the old trees from the Siva Doul premises unethically while the whole world is crying for preserving the ecosystem and the green coverage of the planet earth.
