JORHAT, May 11: The Rain Forest Research Institute, at Sotai here on Tuesday signed a lease agreement with M/s Kraftinn Home Décor India Private Limited, Jorhat, for leasing out recently-developed and installed ‘Vacuum Pressure Impregnation Plant’ for preservative treatment of bamboo.

An RFRI official said that the plant has been installed at the institute’s premises as a part of the Technology Demonstration Centre with financial assistance from Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management and Planning Authority (CAMPA).
The agreement was signed by Dr RSC Jayaraj, director, RFRI and Parikshit Borkotoky, director, Kraftinn Home Décor India Pvt. Limited, Jorhat.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Jayaraj expressed hope that the treatment plant would satisfy the need of bamboo in the construction sector to a great extent, the official stated.
The director also suggested that the use of treated bamboo in construction would sequester carbon dioxide and store in durable products mitigating the effects of climate change.
The official said that the treatment plant could treat around 50-55 bamboo poles within a period of around three hours.
This is the only bamboo treatment plant in the entire upper Assam and is expected that the plant will promote sustainable use of bamboo and open opportunities for livelihood. enhancement of people, the official mentioned.
