2 dead, over 200 injured after gas explosion in Kenya’s Nairobi

Nairobi, Jan 2: A truck carrying gas exploded in Nairobi, Kenya, causing a large fireball that resulted in the death of three people and injuries to over 200 individuals. The explosion occurred on Thursday night in the Embakasi area, leading to a widespread fire that destroyed homes, warehouses, and a garment and textile godown.

The fire also damaged several vehicles and commercial properties, including small and medium-sized businesses. Many residential houses in the vicinity were also affected, with some residents still inside at the time of the incident. Two of the deceased were being treated at the Nairobi West Hospital.

The injured individuals have been rushed to various hospitals for treatment. A command center has been established to coordinate rescue operations and other interventions.

The Kenyan government, in collaboration with various agencies, is working on rescue and humanitarian efforts. Nairobi City County has waived the hospital bills for all victims and is providing essential food and non-food items.

A counselling center has been set up at the Total Petrol Station to offer free counselling to victims. An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fire.
