MORIGAON, Feb 15: The Sadao Assam Garia-Maria-Deshi Jatiya Parishad (AAMJP) staged a two-hour protest program at Bihutali in Morigaon town on Wednesday to protest against the deprivation of indigenous Garia-Maria-Deshi people from the benefits of the Basundhara scheme implemented by the government.

“Discrimination against Garia-Maria indigenous people in the Basundhara scheme will not be accepted,” exclaimed the protesters, questioning why indigenous people were also victims of religious discrimination. They chanted slogans like ‘Chief minister should answer’, ‘Give land pattas to landless indigenous people under the Basundhara scheme’, and ‘No conspiracy to deprive landless indigenous people of land rights’.

After the two-hour protest, they handed over a memorandum to chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, through the Morigaon district commissioner.

The union mentioned that the protesters were led by the Morigaon District Committee of the Garia Maria Deshi Jatiya Parishad, including Jayant Deka, former student leader Chimal Deuri, Rajiv Nath, Morigaon District Media Club president Ratul Deka, and Sadao Koch Rajbongshi Chhatra Sangha secretary Paresh Deka. Also present were Assam Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chhatra Parishad joint secretary Mukdar Alam, All Assam Garia Maria Deshi Jatiya Parishad vice president Ahsanul Haque, and more than 500 Garia Maria Deshi Jatiya Parishad workers from 20 regions of Morigaon district.
