Tell me something about yourself.
I was born in 1995, in Kusumtola, Sonitpur District. After completing my 12th, I pursued a diploma in Theater Stage Craft and Acting. Later, I enrolled at Jagiroad College for Acting, but due to unavoidable circumstances, I had to leave halfway. Subsequently, I joined JD Institute of Fashion Technology and eventually started my own business in October 2016. Initially, I designed and sold clay earthen lamps. Gradually, I ventured into making Assamese jewellery, and now I own a well-known Assamese jewellery shop. Recently, I have also started a cloud kitchen offering various ethnic Assamese foods.
What attracted you to jewellery designing?
During my fashion designing studies, I developed a deep admiration for Assamese traditional jewellery, which inspired me to delve into jewellery designing.
What challenges have you faced?
Fortunately, I haven’t faced many challenges by the grace of God. However, I did encounter a financial crisis in 2018 during the opening of my boutique. I had to resort to taking a gold loan against my wedding jewellery to kickstart my boutique. Since then, it has been running successfully.
What skills are required in your field?
The foremost skill is creativity. Without creativity, one cannot design jewellery. It’s a process through which designers channel their abilities to create artistic innovations.
Does your professional life affect your personal life?
Balancing both is challenging, especially dealing with international customers. The timing often clashes, making it difficult with my toddler. However, I manage well and haven’t faced significant obstacles thus far.
What are your future plans?
Many exciting things are in the pipeline. I’ll disclose them soon.
What is your favourite part about designing jewellery?
I enjoy various aspects, but the creative process stands out the most. Transforming an idea into a unique and beautiful piece of jewellery is always exhilarating. Witnessing the final output and the joy it brings to the customer is truly rewarding.
How has your personal style influenced your jewellery designs?
My personal style significantly influences my designs. I lean towards simpler and sober designs, reflecting in my work. I also enjoy incorporating vibrant colours, adding a lively touch to the designs.
How do you know when a piece of jewellery is finished?
Several factors determine the completion of a piece. Firstly, the overall composition, ensuring balance and proportion in the design. Secondly, using high-quality metals to ensure longevity. Craftsmanship is crucial for seamless integration of all elements. Lastly, thorough polishing and inspection before delivery ensure the piece is pristine.
What advice would you give to upcoming jewellery designers?
It’s essential to understand the materials you work with, including metals and gemstones. Budget awareness is crucial, enabling the creation of beautiful jewellery at affordable prices.
