Jaipur, April 6: The Income Tax department has frozen the account of the Thrissur district committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) in a nationalized bank in the district.
This action follows the omission of this account in the party’s annual returns filed with the department. The account reportedly contained around Rs 4.8 crore, and a recent withdrawal of Rs 1 crore raised concerns.
M.M. Varghese, the Thrissur district secretary of the CPI(M), was questioned by officials on April 5. The I-T department has stated that an explanation for the account’s discrepancy needs to be provided, along with verification of the funds source.
The questioning of Varghese took place at the Kochi office of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) as part of an ongoing investigation into a major loan scam.
The department’s inquiry into the large cash withdrawal is part of a larger effort to combat the usage of black money, particularly regarding the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
