Sydney, May 19: Australia is set to introduce legislation to cap foreign enrolment at its universities to ensure sustainable growth and reduce housing pressure.
The upcoming rules will empower the education minister to set quotas for new international student enrolments at each institution, with universities having purpose-built student housing exempted from this limit.

The legislation, to be introduced this week, aims to support the integrity and sustainability of the international education sector, according to the Ministers’ Media Center. This is part of Australia’s efforts to tighten rules for international students amid rising immigration pressures on the housing market.
Recently, it has become more difficult for international students to obtain visas, with the required savings increased to 75 percent of the national minimum wage.
In March, the government also raised English language requirements for student visas and introduced policies to close loopholes that allowed students to extend their stay. A new assessment, the Genuine Student Test, was also launched to ensure visas are used strictly for education.
