GUWAHATI, Sept 25:  Controversial RTI activist Dulal Bora was arrested by police from the national capital on Wednesday.

Bora was on the run after he was accused in extortion and his name was mentioned in a suicide note of a BJP leader in Assam.

Police said that Dulal Bora admitted himself to a hospital in Delhi claiming that he was unwell. However, the police upon receiving his whereabouts, picked him from the hospital.

As per the latest information, Bora is set to be brought to Guwahati.

His detention is connected to a case in which it is claimed that the RTI Act was used for “personal gains.”

By submitting an application to look into the anomalies in the building of a neighbourhood temple in Rajapukhuri panchayat, he exploited the RTI.

Borah continued to harass Devojit Hazarika, the panchayat delegate in charge of the project, even after receiving replies from the department.

Hazarika, a local BJP leader, allegedly took the extreme step of taking his own life because he was unable to bear the “mental torture.”

In a note, he allegedly included the names of Dulal Bora and three other people, including two journalists.

There have been rumours that Bora coerced officials by misusing the RTI documents. His strategy was to demand payment from these officials in order to get them to drop their complaints.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma earlier on Wednesday mentioned that Dulal Bora should not be considered as a RTI activist and he is just an accused in a case.

Meanwhile, a police team went to the office of Bora in Guwahati and launched a probe.
