Assam achieves milestones in SDG 6 for clean water, sanitation

GUWAHATI, Oct 17: Assam has made significant advancements in achieving Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6, which focuses on clean water and sanitation for all, Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) announced on Thursday.

The CMO on the micro-blogging site X shed light on the government’s initiatives such as the Jal Jeevan Mission, Flood Management and Border Area Programme (FMBAP), Guwahati Water Supply Project, and the Guwahati Sewerage Project, aimed at ensuring safe water supply and improved sanitation across the state.

The CMO wrote, “The state has advanced through initiatives like Jal Jeevan Mission, providing safe drinking water to rural households, and Swachh Bharat Mission, promoting sanitation and hygiene.”

According to the data shared, Assam achieved 100% Open Defecation Free (ODF) status in 2019.

Currently, under the ODF+ initiative, which focuses on sustaining sanitation gains, the state has progressed to 41.93%.

Additionally, the post showcases a remarkable 59% increase in Village Water and Sanitation Committees between 2019 and 2022, with a surge in involvement from 10% to 69% within this period.

“These efforts improve public health, reduce waterborne diseases, and support Assam’s commitment to achieving SDG 6”, the CMO added.
