WAYANAD (KERALA), Oct 29: Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra intensified her campaign for the Wayanad bypoll on Tuesday, sharply criticizing the BJP-led Central government for undermining democracy and failing to provide adequate support for the rehabilitation of landslide-hit areas in the district.

She accused the Modi administration of neglecting the needs of affected residents and not allocating promised funds for recovery efforts.

During her campaign, Priyanka argued that the government’s actions over the past decade demonstrate a blatant disregard for the people and the values upon which the nation was founded. She emphasized that the BJP’s approach to politics is a departure from the principles of public service enshrined in the Constitution, asserting that the ruling party is focused solely on maintaining power at any cost.

Speaking at various corner meetings in Wayanad, Priyanka highlighted the “ugly face” of politics as seen in the region, where compensation for landslide victims has not yet materialized, despite Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s assurances after visiting the disaster-affected areas. She pointed out that similar issues arose in Himachal Pradesh, where the central government has also failed to provide timely assistance.

Priyanka criticized the government’s economic policies, including demonetization, which she claimed disproportionately benefit a small group of business associates linked to the Prime Minister, while neglecting the needs of farmers and tribal communities. She lamented the lack of government support for vital areas such as employment, education, and healthcare, stressing that the Modi government has shown complete disrespect for the people of India.

The Congress leader also referenced the ongoing violence in Manipur, asserting that the pursuit of power through divisive tactics is “wrong politics.” More than 200 people have died, and thousands have been displaced due to ethnic strife in the region since May last year.

Addressing the gathered crowd, Priyanka expressed gratitude to the people of Wayanad for their support of her brother, Rahul Gandhi, especially amid a concerted effort to tarnish his reputation. She emphasized the special bond of love, trust, and loyalty between the residents of Wayanad and her brother, assuring them that she would continue to advocate for their concerns in Parliament, even though the Congress is not in power at the Centre or in Kerala.

As part of her campaign activities, Priyanka also visited the Seethi Haji Memorial Football Stadium in Edvana, Malappuram, where she interacted with young football players, acknowledging that the sport represents more than just a game in the community. She reiterated her commitment to supporting youth and sports development in Wayanad.

This bypoll, necessitated by Rahul Gandhi vacating the seat following his victory in Rai Bareli, will be held on November 13. Priyanka is contesting against LDF’s veteran leader Sathyan Mokeri, a former MLA, and the BJP’s Navya Haridas, a two-time councillor of the Kozhikode Corporation. (PTI)
