DIPHU, Feb 8: Kache Rongpipi, Executive Member (EM) for the Sericulture department of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC), inaugurated the Silk Processing Unit and mini library at the assistant director of sericulture office in Diphu on Saturday.
EM Rongpipi expressed her happiness while inaugurating the silk processing unit, stating that local people would benefit from the yarn-spinning machine introduced by the department.
“Since time immemorial, we have been closely associated with silkworm rearing, which we did for consumption and yarn production.”
Rongpipi emphasised that sericulture was a rural economy that can uplift society, but it should be commercialized to develop the rural economy.
Meanwhile, Member of Autonomous Council (MAC) of KAAC, Avijit Kro stated that the sericulture department has always supported the people and will provide training on modern silkworm rearing.
Kro highlighted the benefits of using machines for yarn production, which can produce more yarn than manual method, especially when yarn prices are high.
He encouraged unemployed youth to adopt modern silkworm rearing practices.
Opening the new silk processing unit in the district is a significant task, Kro said. “In villages, women make yarn, but much of it goes to waste. With modern machinery, silkworm rearing can be developed.”
Longki Timung, Assistant Director of Sericulture, expressed his gratitude to former EM in-charge Sericulture, Lunsing Teron, for initiating the silk processing unit. Timung informed that the department is now ready to buy eri cocoons from farmers, regardless of grade, at prices ranging from Rs. 600 to Rs. 1000 per kg.
The inauguration program was attended by officials from the Sericulture department.
