JORHAT, Feb 9: The 94th annual conference of Srimanta Sankardev Sangha, held at Eraltoli Pathar in Jorhat, concluded with the ceremonial lowering of the Dharma dhwaja (religious flag).
Devotees and visitors thronged the 1,200-bigha area, named ‘Sonaram Chutia Samannay Kshetra,’ on the final day of the four-day socio-religious and cultural event.
The Dharma dhwaja was brought down in the evening and handed over to members of the Tezpur district committee of the Sangha, which will host the 95th conference next year, marking the official conclusion of the event.
Earlier in the day, State Assembly speaker Biswajit Daimary addressed the Dharmaluchani Sabha as the chief guest. In his speech, he lauded Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev for his religious teachings and extensive travels across Assam and beyond, centuries ago, which led to cultural awakening and social reforms.
Daimary emphasised that the Gurujona dedicated his entire life to spiritual enlightenment and social harmony by unifying all sections of the greater Assamese society. Urging people to follow Srimanta Sankardev’s path, he also praised the Sangha for its efforts in propagating his teachings and preserving his cultural and literary heritage.
The programme, presided over by Padadhikar Bhabendra Nath Deka, was attended by former Padadhikar Kamalakanta Gogoi, now an advisor, along with other functionaries and members of the Sangha.
Earlier in the morning, members of the body undertook a mass cleaning drive, followed by naam prasanga (devotional singing). The first executive meeting of the newly elected committee members of the Sangha was then held, followed by an Antaranga Alap (interactive session).
Devotees staying in 200 shibirs (camps) inside the venue were seen bidding tearful farewells to one another as they prepared to leave.
