Sit-in demonstration in Margherita

MARGHERITA, March 11: A sit in demonstration for three hours was held on Monday at North Margherita Rangamancha, Margherita to repeal the Buddha Gaya Temple Management (BTMC) Act 1949 at Buddh Gaya, Bihar.

More than 500 Buddhist people including Buddhist monks staged sit -in demonstration at North Margherita Rangamancha where through Panchsheel prayer the programme began as protesters held placards and Festoons to repeal the BTMC Act 1949. 

The sit in demonstration was organised by All Assam Buddhist Association Tinsukia district committee, Purvanchal Bhikkhu Sangha, Purvanchal Buddha Samity,  Federation of Barua Buddhists Welfare Association of Assam along with Buddhist people such as from Singpho, Magh Baruah,Tangsa, Tamang,Tai Khamyang and Tai Phakey community who came from Margherita, Digboi, Tinsukia district, Dibrugarh District and neighbouring state Arunachal Pradesh.

Sibu Talukdar secretary general of Federation of Barua Buddhist Welfare Association of Assam said that it was very unfortunate that Buddha Gaya Temple Management Act has been run by non-Buddhist community (Hindu Brahmin) as Buddha Gaya is a sacred shrine where Buddhist community residing all over the world come here for pilgrimage.

From February 12 onwards Buddhist monks participated in a peaceful hunger strike at Buddha Gaya Bihar but unfortunately on February 28 midnight hours Buddhist monks were forcefully removed by Bihar police from the Hunger strike which have hurt millions of Buddhist devotees residing across the world, said Sibu Talukdar.
