DIMAPUR, March 26: Nagaland Director General of Police (DGP) Rupin Sharma has termed the Nagaland Police Service (NPS) as the backbone of the state police force.
Addressing the 52nd general conference of the Nagaland Police Service Association (NPSA) at the Chumoukedima police complex on Wednesday, Sharma emphasised that the strength of the Nagaland Police depends on the strength of its backbone.
“If the backbone is weak, it will be difficult to face any challenges,” Sharma said. “While I have not seen any signs of weakness, there is certainly room for improvement.”
Sharma urged NPS officers to adhere to the one-to-three or one-to-four chain of command. This means having one leader supported by three or four subordinates, ensuring that if the leader is unavailable, others are still well-informed and capable of taking charge.
The state police chief also encouraged senior officers to engage in regular interactions with various ranks through ‘darbars’ for better policing, stressing the importance of teamwork. He pointed out that a lack of regular communication could hinder the force’s effectiveness. “If we do not have interactions, we will not know what is happening,” he said, adding that “one-way communication will not help” and urging officers to maintain two-way communication among all ranks.
Sharma also acknowledged that, like any other organisation, there is always room for improvement within the Nagaland police.
Special invitee to the conference, IGP (Admin) Joseph Hesso, who is set to retire from the Nagaland police in a few months, shared his experiences as a police officer in the state and offered his suggestions for the betterment of the force.
