BISWANATH CHARIALI, April 16: Taranath Sarma, the revered freedom fighter, social reformer, and former Mouja Panchayat representative, was fondly remembered on his 108th birth anniversary at a commemorative event held in Samar Dalani on Tuesday.
The occasion was organized by the Taranath Sarma Smriti Pustakalay, which hosted a public meeting at the conference hall of Dakhin Nagsankar High School.

The day-long programme began with the hoisting of the institutional flag by Hem Sagar Samar, Vice President of the library committee, who also presided over the meeting.
A ceremonial lamp was lit by Bhabani Sarma in front of a portrait of the late Taranath Sarma, while Hemlal Sarma, a long-time associate of the late leader, offered floral tributes.
Inaugurating the open session, Purna Kumar Sarma, recipient of the Sahitya Akademi’s Translation Prize, paid homage to Sarma’s enduring legacy.
“Taranath Sarma was not just a freedom fighter but also a torchbearer of social reform whose contribution continues to inspire generations,” he said.
Appointed speakers for the session included retired teacher Narad Upadhyaya, Bhuban Lamsal, and Damodar Baral, who reflected on Sarma’s life, work, and his role in uplifting marginalized communities. Poets Pushpa Dahal and Kamal Sarma presented self-composed poems dedicated to the memory of the iconic figure.
The session also featured addresses from local cultural figures including Punya Nirola, Umesh Dhakal, Gopal Sarma, and Anjan Baskota. Community members such as Gupta Sarma, Harilal Siruwal, Amit Baskota, Indra Sarma, Saroj Baskota, and Arun Baskota were present, underscoring Sarma’s continued relevance and respect in the region.
All proceedings were conducted by Mahesh Khatiwoda, Secretary of the Taranath Sarma Smriti Pustakalay, who thanked the attendees for their participation and commitment to preserving the legacy of Taranath Sarma.
