GUWAHATI, April 27: Gauhati University (GU) has made significant progress in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, climbing to 48th place nationally.
“GU, the oldest university in North-East India, has secured a coveted place in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2025, entering the 1201–1500 global band. It also features in the Asia University Rankings at 351–400, rising to 48th position among Indian higher-education institutions —the best showing for any university in the region, reinforcing its growing academic stature on the continental stage,” an official statement said.
The announcement comes close on the heels of GU’s 32nd Convocation, held on 25 April.
“This ranking is a collective victory for our students, faculty and alumni. It validates the bold reforms we have launched, from NEP-aligned curricula and digital governance to a sharpened research focus, and inspires us to aim even higher,” said vice-chancellor Prof. Nani Gopal Mahanta.
Over the past year, GU has amassed an A+ NAAC grade, secured 13th place among state universities in NIRF 2024, and obtained ISO 9001:2015 certification. Its scholars appear in Stanford University’s global top 2 percent scientists list, and the University’s Scopus h-Index now stands at 106. Strategic partnerships have accelerated: a 5G Use-Case Laboratory was inaugurated by the Union Minister for Communications; MoUs with TERI and NIELIT are expanding opportunities in climate research and emerging technologies; and a GU–TERI Centre for Himalayan Studies is poised to open later this year.
The tables also show GU outperforming neighbouring Tezpur University, ranked 501-600 in THE Asia University Rankings (1501+ globally), particularly on teaching environment and research quality.
“These metrics reinforce our resolve to foster interdisciplinary scholarship and deepen global partnerships,” Prof. Mahanta added, echoing his Convocation appeal for “a vibrant research culture that matches our storied past.
Founded in 1948, Gauhati University today comprises 49 departments, more than 300 affiliated colleges and a student population exceeding 300,000. As the institution approaches its 80th anniversary, today’s ranking milestone signals its transformation from a regional powerhouse into a globally recognisedcentre of knowledge.
