BISWANATH CHARIALI, July 14: Nilamani Handique, a panchayat secretary posted at Uttar Sootea Gaon Panchayat and a resident of Solal Gaon in Sootea, was found dead on Monday morning in a suspected case of suicide. He was 55.
According to reports, Handique had left home early in the morning for his routine walk but failed to return.
Concerned family members searched for him and later alerted Sootea Police when he could not be found.
His body was later discovered hanging from a tree near a bamboo grove by the Ghiladhari river in the Ghiuladharimukh area.
Police personnel and a judicial magistrate visited the spot and sent the body for post-mortem examination.
While preliminary findings suggest suicide by hanging, the exact cause of death is yet to be determined.
Nilamani Handique was well known in the region not just for his official role but also for his cultural contributions.
A respected dramatist and scriptwriter, his works had earned recognition at the state level.
Several drama teams have won awards performing his acclaimed one-act plays, including Sanskar, Artist, Khyoma Kori Diyok, and Jui Lagise.
His compilation Bisforon, published in 2026, brought together seven of his plays.
He also served as the secretary of the Sootea regional committee of the Purvanchalia Tai Sahitya Sabha and was associated with several socio-cultural organisations in the greater Sootea area.
News of his death has cast a pall of gloom over the community.
