MARGHERITA, July 16: A two-day awareness meeting on menstrual hygiene, nutrition, and precautionary practices, organised by the national voluntary organisation ‘The WE Foundation’, concluded successfully on Wednesday at the India Club in Margherita.
Held on July 15 and 16, the event aimed to promote better understanding and practices around menstrual health among women, particularly from self-help groups in the region.
The programme witnessed the participation of around 300 women and several notable figures from local administrative, social, and media circles.
Sanjib Shah, Project Officer of The WE Foundation from West Bengal, served as the keynote speaker on the opening day.
He spoke extensively on the challenges women face during menstruation, emphasising the importance of hygiene, balanced nutrition, and awareness to break taboos and foster a healthier outlook.
The concluding day featured several distinguished guests, including Subhananda Deori, Inspector of the Margherita Handloom and Textile Department; Pallavi Gogoi, Coordinator at the Margherita Education Department Cluster Resource Centre; Bobby Hazarika, BPM, Assam; Deepa Shyam, Assistant Secretary of Sauravi Women’s Committee; social worker Deepanjali Chiring; and journalists Bikash Baruah, Abdul Alim, and Mridu Baruah, among others.
Guests were formally welcomed with traditional Assamese phoolam gamochas, and a series of speeches were delivered highlighting the need for continued community-level efforts in menstrual health education.
As part of the initiative, sanitary napkin pads were distributed among attendees.
Over the two-day period, more than a thousand women received sanitary pads as part of the campaign’s outreach.
The event was moderated by Javed Ali, Coordinator of The WE Foundation, who thanked participants and collaborators for their support in making the programme a success.
