IMPHAL, JULY 25: The Rajya Sabha approved a six-month extension of President’s Rule in Manipur after a resolution moved by Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The extension, which comes into force from August 13, 2025, is to ensure governance and tackle prevailing instability in the state.
The House officially accepted and approved the motion, which stated: “That this House sanctions the extension in operation of the Proclamation dated the 13th February, 2025 relating to Manipur, made under Article 356 of the Constitution by the President, for a further period of six months from 13 August, 2025.”
President’s Rule was initially extended in Manipur on February 13, 2025, after a long period of ethnic conflict and administrative breakdown. The state has remained unrestful ever since, particularly in sensitive pockets. The extension is well-timed when security issues continue to exist in a number of districts. The central government should use this extended duration to return to normality, encourage peacebuilding activities, and review the ability to hold Assembly elections once the situation stabilises.
