DIMAPUR, Aug 5: Nagaland chief minister Neiphiu Rio, who is also the president of the Nagaland Olympic Association (NOA), reviewed the ongoing sports initiatives in the state.
Chairing a meeting at the NOA Office in Kohima last evening, Rio also discussed key upcoming sporting events with NOA officials that will shape the future of sports in the Northeast region.
During the meeting, discussions were held regarding the 39th National Games, which will be hosted by Meghalaya in February 2027.
Nagaland has formally proposed to co-host the wrestling discipline of the event, showcasing its growing expertise and structure in combat sports.
Rio further reviewed plans for the next edition of the North East Games, which was scheduled for October 2025 but has now been postponed to early 2026. The event will be hosted by Tripura.
Preparedness to host the UWW Alysh Belt Wrestling & Naga Wrestling World Championship, scheduled from November 15 to November 23 this year and the 1st edition of Dr. T. Ao Junior (Girls) National Football Championship in Nagaland was also discussed in detail.
Rio also inspected the NOA gym facility in Kohima later, which is nearing completion. The facility is expected to be operational soon.
Rio expressed his continued commitment to strengthening Nagaland’s sports ecosystem and positioning the state as a key contributor to national and international sporting events.
