SHILLONG, AUGUST 8: Meghalaya Cabinet on Thursday cleared two important policy decisions that seek to promote gender equality and improve tourism services in the state. One of the important decisions is permitting women to work at night shifts throughout Meghalaya, while the other one controls the rental of personal bikes and cars to tourists.
Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, who presided over the meeting, said that the government had modified a previous notification to allow women to work night shifts on a voluntary basis. He stressed that this move is in line with overall labor policies and addresses long-standing requests for gender equality in the workplace.
Sangma ensured that stringent safety protocols will be followed to safeguard women who have night shifts. These are CCTV monitoring, safe transport arrangements, and proper guidelines so that no woman will be forced to work at night against her will.
In another move, the Cabinet also gave approval for new rules to regularize and regulate the renting of two-wheelers and four-wheelers to visitors. The new policy is such that all the service providers will have to get registered with the transport department. Different frameworks have been made for motorbikes and automobiles to provide better monitoring and services.
These resolutions are a progressive step towards empowering women and safer, better-organized travel experiences for tourists visiting Meghalaya.
