DIPHU, Aug 14: Family members of a 26-year-old youth, identified as Ajay Nayar, have alleged that he died under mysterious circumstances inside Diphu District Jail last night.
His body was brought to Diphu Medical College & Hospital (DMC&H) this morning.
At DMC&H, the family informed the media that the deceased was the son of Madan Nayar and Gori Nayar of Horilal Basti, Diphu town, under Diphu police station.
According to his wife, Kungri Timungpi, Nayar, an auto-rickshaw driver, was on his way to Manja to drop passengers on August 2 when, on seeing police, the passengers jumped out of the vehicle and fled, leaving behind Nayar and their bags.
Police reportedly found Spasmo Proxyvon capsules in the bags and arrested Nayar, filing charges against him for alleged involvement in drug trafficking. He was later sent to Diphu District Jail.
The deceased’s brother-in-law, Harmon Timung, said the family had met Nayar in jail on August 9 and found him in good health.
Jail authorities claimed that Nayar died after falling in the toilet and said they had tried to call the family to inform them, but no one responded.
Timung, however, denied receiving any such call.
The family said they came to know about the death around 9 am on Thursday, when the body was being brought to DMC&H for post-mortem. Holding the jailer responsible, they demanded an inquiry into the incident.
