ITANAGAR, Sept 8: The Arunachal Pradesh Youth Congress (APYC) has strongly condemned the government’s high-handed approach in preventing social activist Bhanu Tatak from attending a three-month short course at Dublin City University.
In an official statement, APYC alleged that the action was taken in retaliation to Tatak’s leadership in protests against the proposed 11,500 MW Siang Dam Project (SUMP).
The statement criticised the authorities for not providing prior notice before immigration officials stopped her at Delhi airport based on a complaint filed by the Itanagar Police.
Calling the move a fabricated case intended to silence dissent, the statement described it as an arbitrary and condemnable act of political high-handedness.
It further stressed that any major project like the Siang Upper Multipurpose Project should be executed only after obtaining consent from affected communities.
The APYC stated that attempts to curb dissent will not succeed in a democratic country where individual rights must be protected.
The organisation expressed solidarity with Bhanu Tatak and demanded that justice be provided to her at the earliest.
