GUWAHATI, Sept 20: The United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent), or ULFA (I), has expressed deep grief and extended heartfelt condolences over the untimely demise of renowned Assamese singer and cultural icon Zubeen Garg.
In an official press statement issued by the group’s Assistant Secretary of the Publicity Department, Md. Sayed Uddin Ahmed, also known by his alias Rumel Asom, the outfit hailed Zubeen Garg as a “name and an identity” in Assamese music and society.

Describing the singer as “an unparalleled jewel of Assamese culture,” the banned outfit stated that his contributions transcended the musical sphere, reaching deep into the heart of Assam’s socio-cultural identity.
“Zubeen Garg is an unparalleled jewel of Assamese music. He is the pride of Assamese culture,” the statement read.
ULFA (I) noted that Garg’s sudden death is not only a monumental loss for Assam but also a major blow to the entire subcontinental music community.
According to the outfit, the singer’s artistry was instrumental in expressing the collective voice of the people.
“Through his songs, Zubeen Garg brought to life the inner voice of the people and society,” the group said.
The rebel outfit further lauded Garg’s active role in voicing concerns related to Assam and its people.
“Not just as an artist, Zubeen also played an important role in the national life of Assam. He actively raised his voice on various issues impacting Assam and the Assamese people,” the press release mentioned.
Citing information received by the organisation, ULFA (I) stated that Zubeen Garg passed away in Indonesia during a scuba diving expedition due to sudden heart failure.
The circumstances of his death, though shocking, were acknowledged with solemnity by the group.
In closing, the ULFA (I) expressed its deepest condolences to the bereaved family and fans of the late singer.
“We, the United Liberation Front of Asom [Independent], deeply mourn the death of this glorious son of Assam and convey our heartfelt condolences to his bereaved family and fans. May his soul rest in peace,” the statement concluded.
Zubeen Garg, widely regarded as one of the most prominent cultural figures of modern Assam, leaves behind a legacy of music, activism, and social engagement that resonated across generations.
