GUWAHATI, Sept 29: PhonePe and Mastercard have partnered to enable contactless payments for Mastercard cardholders in India through NFC-enabled smartphones.
The new Tap & Pay feature allows users to make in-store payments by simply tapping their smartphones at payment terminals using the PhonePe app.
The collaboration offers secure and frictionless in-store payments while also supporting tokenised e-commerce transactions.
Mastercard credit, debit, and prepaid cards issued in India can be saved on NFC-capable Android smartphones, allowing users to enjoy all the benefits of card-based payments.
By combining Mastercard’s global expertise in tokenization with PhonePe’s 618 million registered users, the feature expands access to digital payments within India and internationally.
Deep Agrawal, Head of Payments at PhonePe, said that the collaboration brings device-based tokenization to millions of users, merging NFC smartphone capabilities with growing consumer preference for Tap & Pay.
He added that the feature enhances both convenience and security for in-store and online payments.
Ravi Datla, Senior Vice President, Products & Solutions, South Asia, Mastercard, said the partnership broadens the reach of digital payments, empowering Mastercard cardholders to Tap & Pay at merchant outlets in India and abroad.
He noted that India continues to set the pace of digital commerce globally, and Mastercard is proud to support this momentum.
Users can securely add their Mastercard credit and debit cards to the PhonePe app through a simple one-time process.
Once tokenised, they can make seamless payments by selecting the card and tapping their smartphone at any PoS terminal or using it for online shopping.
The new feature will be rolled out to Mastercard cardholders on the PhonePe app in a phased manner.
