DIPHU, Oct 6: Diphu market witnessed a significant rush on Monday as people thronged shops for Lakshmi Puja, locally known as Lakhi Puja—one of the most important Hindu festivals in Assam.
Dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi, the deity of wealth, prosperity, fertility, knowledge, and beauty, the festival sees devotees making elaborate preparations.
Local vendors displayed a variety of agricultural produce, spices such as raw turmeric and ginger, seasonal fruits including pomelo, and essential items like lotus flowers and paddy bundles—both symbolic offerings in Lakshmi Puja.
Among the most sought after items were lotus flowers and paddy bunches, which hold deep mythological significance. As per the legend of Samudra Manthan, Lakshmi emerged from the cosmic ocean seated on a lotus, earning her the name “Padma.”
In the evening, devotees perform rituals and offer prayers at home, welcoming Goddess Lakshmi and seeking her blessings for prosperity, wealth, and protection from illusion (maya).
