Lakhimpur, 18 Oct: Construction work on the Ghunasuti bridge over the Subansiri River in Lakhimpur district has remained stopped for the past six months. Local residents and organisations have expressed concern over the delay in the project, which aims to connect Lakhimpur and Dhakuakhana through the old D.K. Road.

The Rs 380-crore bridge project was launched in November 2023. Out of 43 proposed pillars, only 28 have been completed so far, and work has not progressed since. The sudden halt has drawn attention as the bridge was expected to be completed before the 2026 elections.

Residents of Lakhimpur, Dhakuakhana, Ghunasuti and Majuli said the bridge would reduce the travel distance between Lakhimpur and Dhakuakhana by nearly 40 kilometres. However, the lack of visible progress and limited action from the authorities concerned have led to public frustration.

The 2.6-kilometre-long bridge has been a long-pending demand of the people in the region. The delay is reportedly due to a shortage of machinery and equipment with the agency handling the project. Locals have urged the government to review the situation and ensure early completion of the bridge.
