GUWAHATI, Oct 21: In the wake of a recent law and order situation outside Baksa District Jail, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday visited Lakshmipur A Block village in Baksa district to meet affected residents and assess the situation on the ground.
The incident, which occurred during the transfer of two accused in the high-profile Zubeen Garg death case, led to unrest among locals and resulted in police firing to control the situation.

During his visit, Sarma personally met the families of the injured and handed over cheques of Rs 2 lakh each to support their ongoing medical treatment.
He assured the families that the Government of Assam is fully committed to providing all necessary assistance and will extend additional financial support if required, underscoring the administration’s concern for the welfare of citizens affected by unforeseen incidents.
The chief minister also paid respects at the Hari Mandir in Lakshmipur A Block, interacting with the villagers and commending their continued cooperation in maintaining peace and harmony in the region.
He emphasised that the government values the support of local communities in fostering a stable and secure environment, and called upon them to continue participating actively in the state’s development initiatives.
Addressing the issue of justice, Sarma reiterated that ensuring a fair and transparent investigation into Zubeen Garg’s death remains a top priority for the government.
He assured that the authorities are handling the matter with utmost seriousness and that all necessary steps are being taken to ensure accountability.
On the occasion, the chief minister announced a financial grant of Rs 10 lakh for the development of the Hari Mandir and an additional Rs 10 lakh for the local Shiv Temple.
These grants aim to support the upkeep, renovation, and enhancement of religious and cultural spaces in the village, reflecting the government’s commitment to preserving heritage and fostering community welfare.
Guardian minister Jayanta Mallabaruah, MLA Phanidhar Talukdar, deputy commissioner, Superintendent of Police, and other senior officials accompanied the chief minister during the visit, highlighting the administration’s collective effort to address citizen concerns promptly and effectively.
Sarma’s visit has been widely appreciated by villagers, who lauded the chief minister’s hands-on approach and assurance of continued support, reinforcing confidence in the government’s dedication to public welfare and development.
