Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal on Monday placed India’s maritime ambitions at the centre of the country’s development blueprint, saying the sector is driving the vision of Viksit Bharat.
Addressing the inaugural session of India Maritime Week 2025, Sonowal said India is setting “new benchmarks in maritime growth and innovation” under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. He noted that the event, now engaging participants from over 85 countries, shows how India’s maritime outreach has expanded globally.
Sonowal said this year’s theme, ‘Uniting Ocean, One Mission’, represents India’s belief in shared progress and echoes the philosophy of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam — the world as one family. “In this spirit, we share knowledge, align our goals, and build partnerships that benefit all,” he said.
The minister underlined that India’s maritime capacity has grown steadily with improved port infrastructure, increased cargo-handling efficiency, and legal reforms that support the shipping industry. “Our aim is clear — to see India among the top five shipbuilding nations in the world,” Sonowal said, framing the maritime sector as a vital pillar of national growth.
India Maritime Week 2025 brings together global stakeholders to deliberate on sustainable growth, technology, and trade in ports and shipping.
