Tezpur , Oct 28 : Tezpur University is facing unrest as serious allegations have emerged against Vice-Chancellor Prof. Shambhu Nath Singh, sparking a 36-day-long ‘Darpan Satyagraha’ by students.
The university fraternity has accused the VC of financial and administrative misconduct, including alleged misuse of funds, lack of transparency, and a luxurious lifestyle involving frequent foreign trips and business-class travel. Prof. Singh, however, has denied any wrongdoing, claiming all expenses were as per rules and audits.

Students have also alleged massive deforestation on campus, saying it has disturbed the university’s ecological balance. Academic voices cite a sharp decline in performance and rankings, blaming faculty shortages, stalled recruitments, and weak research support for the slide.
Tensions peaked after the VC allegedly mocked students mourning singer Zubeen Garg’s death, saying, “Don’t make it funny.” The remark triggered outrage and fuelled ongoing protests demanding his removal.
In response, the Assam Governor has set up a fact-finding committee to probe the allegations, while a Congress MP has urged the Prime Minister to intervene and restore accountability at the central university.
