Guwahati, October 29: The final rites of singer and cultural figure Zubeen Garg were held on Thursday with the immersion of his ashes in the Brahmaputra near the Umananda Temple ghat. His wife, Garima Saikia Garg, and sister, Palmee Borthakur, and singer’s close associates.
The moment was marked by silence and restraint as Garima and Palmee carried out the rites before the flowing river that had witnessed many of Zubeen’s songs and concerts over the decades. A few close relatives and associates attended the ceremony, standing still as the ashes dissolved into the waters that run through Assam’s heart.

The immersion followed more than a month after Zubeen’s death on September 19 and his cremation at Sonapur on September 23, when thousands gathered at Hatimura to bid farewell. Thursday’s immersion concluded a public journey that began in music and ended in memory—leaving behind a silence that now hums with his songs.
