Guwahati, Nov 04 : The city witnessed an emotional farewell on Tuesday as the final rites of noted flautist Dipak Sarma were performed at the Navagraha crematorium with full state honours. Family members, artists, and public figures attended the ceremony as his brother lit the funeral pyre.
Sarma’s mortal remains were flown in from Chennai earlier in the day by a special chartered flight. After arrival, the body was taken to his Ambikagiri Nagar residence where close relatives carried out traditional rituals before the public paid their respects.
Crowds gathered at Seuj Sangha, a space long associated with Sarma’s music and teaching. Students and musicians played the flute as a mark of respect, while admirers queued to offer flowers and bid goodbye.
Sarma, 57, died on November 3 in a Chennai hospital after prolonged treatment for a rare liver ailment. He is survived by his wife and son.
