In a Facebook post, Mahanta said his conscience guided the decision. “If anyone seeks information related to my brother, there should not be even a trace of doubt about my impartiality. Therefore, I have decided to step down from the post,” he wrote.

He added that he had informed the Chief Minister’s Office earlier about his intention to resign if such a situation arose. His resignation followed an RTI application seeking details of government funding for cultural events involving Shyamkanu Mahanta.

Mahanta said he introduced several reforms in the Assam Information Commission, including an online paperless system, regular hearings, and stricter action against misuse of the RTI Act.

Meanwhile, Shyamkanu Mahanta remains in judicial custody at Baksa district jail along with Siddharth Sharma, Sandipan Garg, and Zubeen Garg’s two personal security officers, Nandeshwar Bora and Paresh Baishya.
