NAGAON, Nov 20: In a surprise operation, Nagaon District Commissioner Debashish Sarma on Wednesday inspected the Morikolong fish market, Barbazar vegetable market and several sweet outlets in the town, accompanied by the Food Safety Officer, Fisheries Officer and a mobile laboratory team.
During the inspection, fish samples were collected from the Morikolong market to test for the presence of formalin. The team also visited the paikari vegetable market at Barbazar, where samples of vegetables were taken to check for pesticide residues.
The DC later inspected a sweet factory owned by Biju Ghosh at Morikolong and found sweets being prepared in unhygienic conditions. Authorities sealed the factory on the spot. At PNB Sweet Shop near Dhing Gate, the drainage system was found to be unsatisfactory. The Commissioner directed officials to issue an improvement notice to the owner and warned that non-compliance would lead to legal action.
Senior Food Safety Officer Munindra Bhuyan, Junior Food Safety Officer Sumu Saikia and Fisheries Development Officer Liza Morang were among those present during the drive, which aimed to ensure food safety and quality across the town.
According to an official release, the DC’s surprise inspection has sent a strong message to traders and shop owners to maintain proper hygiene and quality standards in their establishments.
