Of the total cases, theft dominated the list with 1,208 incidents, reinforcing it as the city’s most common crime. Kidnapping followed with 206 cases, reflecting continued concern among residents and police despite ongoing enforcement measures.

The city also reported 102 dacoities, 59 murders, six robberies and two dowry-related cases in the same period. No witch-hunting incidents were recorded this year, indicating a reduction in certain violent crimes compared to previous years.

Sarma said crime patterns in Guwahati have varied over the past decade, with repeated spikes in theft and kidnapping but noticeable drops in dacoity and dowry cases since 2021. He attributed improvements in specific categories to targeted operations, expanded surveillance and strengthened coordination between police units.

With Guwahati contributing a significant share to the state’s overall crime figures, the government is pushing technology-driven policing and wider public awareness drives to address urban crime challenges and improve safety across the capital region.
