GUWAHATI, Dec 10: A massive fire tore through Sohum Emporia late on intervening night of Dec 9 and 10 in Guwahati, leaving the multi-storey commercial hub severely damaged and sending emergency teams into an intense overnight battle to control the blaze. The fire, which reportedly began close to midnight, spread at alarming speed and engulfed all six floors before any evacuation of materials was possible.
The complex, located in the busy ABC locality, houses several branches of the State Bank of India, all of which have suffered heavy losses. Early estimates suggest that cash, official documents and property worth several crores may have been destroyed. Firefighters said the situation became critical within minutes as dense smoke and soaring flames blocked access to key sections of the building.
More than a dozen fire tenders were deployed, with teams working continuously for more than six hours. Despite their efforts, the fire had not been fully brought under control at the time of filing this report, and operations were still under way.
Officials said the cause of the blaze remains unclear, and a detailed investigation has been initiated to determine how the incident began and assess the full scale of the damage.
