DIBRUGARH, Dec 22: Veteran Assamese actress Ranjana Sarmah Bordoloi, a prominent figure of Assamese cinema during the 1960s and 1970s, passed away on Sunday evening at JJM Hospital here. She was 80.
Bordoloi, regarded as one of the most glamorous and talented actresses of her era, starred in several landmark Assamese films including Dr Bezbaruah, Kokadeuta Nati aru Hati, Maniram Dewan, Morom Trishna, Loti-Ghoti, Pratidhwani, Ratanlal and Sonmai.
At a time when few Assamese women ventured into acting, she carved a lasting place for herself on the silver screen through her talent and screen presence.
Apart from acting, Bordoloi was an accomplished dancer, proficient in Bharatanatyam and other classical forms, which further enriched her contribution to Assam’s cultural life.
She also performed in films directed by legendary cultural icon Bhupen Hazarika and shared a close professional association with him.
She was a founding member of the renowned theatre group Mancharupa, established in 1957 by Bhupen Hazarika and noted artist Hasan Sharif Ahmed, and also lent her voice to radio plays broadcast by All India Radio.
In recognition of her contribution to Assamese art and culture, Ranjana Sarmah Bordoloi was honoured with the state government’s prestigious Bishnu Rabha Award and was an artist pensioner.
Her passing marks the end of a significant chapter in the history of Assamese cinema and theatre, and she is widely remembered for her pioneering role and enduring legacy in the cultural landscape of the state.
