CCTOA panel rejects GoM report on ST status

KOKRAJHAR, Jan 3: A meeting of the Consultative Group constituted by the Coordination Committee of Tribal Organisations of Assam (CCTOA) to examine and suggest on the report of the Group of Ministers (GoM) regarding the scheduling of six communities into the Scheduled Tribe (ST) list of Assam was held at the Tribal Rest House in Guwahati on Friday.

The meeting was chaired by Suhas Chakma, Chairman of the Consultative Group, and was attended by members Jiten Borgoyary, Prafullo Kumar Hazowary, Kulaswami Laluwary, Sabda Ram Rabha, Tankeswar Rabha, Chief Executive Member of the Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council, along with leaders of the CCTOA.

After detailed deliberations, the Consultative Group unanimously decided to reject the recommendations of the Group of Ministers, which were submitted on the floor of the Assam Legislative Assembly on November 29 last.

The members expressed serious concern over the findings and recommendations of the GoM report, stating that they did not adequately address the interests and safeguards of existing tribal communities in the state.

The Consultative Group and CCTOA leaders resolved to convey their decision to the concerned authorities and continue advocating for the protection of the rights and constitutional safeguards of the Scheduled Tribes of Assam.

Chakma said that the meeting discussed at length on the protection of the existing tribal communities and objected the group of minister’s report for granting ST status to six communities in the state.

He said that the consultative group has been emphasizing intact wellbeing towards the welfare and development of the existing tribal communities in the state.
