DIBRUGARH, Jan 9: The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has successfully completed the electrification of the strategically important Tinsukia–Dibrugarh and Makum–Ledo rail sections, strengthening rail infrastructure in Upper Assam and the Northeast.
Railway officials said the move will reduce dependence on diesel locomotives, lower fuel costs and cut carbon emissions and noise pollution, promoting cleaner and more sustainable rail operations.
“With electric traction now operational, trains on these sections will run at higher speeds with improved acceleration and reliability. Passengers can expect faster, smoother and more punctual services, while freight operations will become more efficient, supporting regional trade and industry,” an official said.
These rail sections are vital links connecting key commercial, industrial and tourism hubs in Assam. Electrification will enhance network capacity, ensure smoother connectivity with the national railway grid and enable seamless movement of passenger and goods trains.
The project is part of Indian Railways’ nationwide electrification drive aimed at energy efficiency, reduced operational costs and environmentally friendly transport. Officials expressed confidence that the completion will boost rail connectivity in the Northeast and pave the way for additional passenger and freight services in the coming years.
