Yaba worth Rs 20 lakh seized in Tripura, one held

AGARTALA, Jan 12: Acting on confidential intelligence, personnel of the Tripura Police conducted a joint operation on Sunday late night in the Ichhaipara area under Kadamtala Police Station of Orth District near the India–Bangladesh border, leading to the seizure of of Yaba tablets worth Rs 20 lakh along with cash and mobile phones.

According to Police, the joint raid was carried out by the 97th Battalion of the Border Security Force (BSF), stationed at Yakubnagar, in coordination with Kadamtala Police.

During the search at the residence of local resident Taj Uddin in Ichhaipara, the team recovered a total of 1,929 Yaba tablets packed in 10 packets, four mobile phones, Rs 77,910 in Indian currency, and 1,577 Bangladeshi taka.

“However, sensing the raid, the house owner Taj Uddin managed to flee the scene. One person, Nizam Uddin (41), was arrested from the spot. He is a resident of Ward No. 5 under Bhagyapur Gram Panchayat” said Police.

Kadamtala Police Station Second Officer-in-Charge Remulas Sangma stated that the estimated black market value of the seized Yaba tablets is approximately Rs 20.29 lakh.

“A case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act is being processed, and efforts are underway to arrest the absconding accused. The arrested person, along with the seized contraband, cash, and mobile phones, will be produced before the Dharmanagar District and Sessions Court”, he said.

Meanwhile, local residents alleged that the border-adjacent area has long been used as a safe route for drug trafficking. Police have assured that surveillance and operations in the region will be intensified to curb cross-border narcotics smuggling.
