JORHAT, Jan 18: With the aim of promoting scientific temperament and popularising science along with the intellectual development of students, the Jorhat branch of the Assam Science Society has organised the first annual Science Festival with an elaborate three-day programme starting from 19 Jan at the distinguished scientist Dr Jogendra Nath Barua Memorial. The festival will be held at the permanent campus of the Jorhat Science Society located at Borbheta, Jorhat, with the cooperation of the Jorhat District Administration, Assam Pollution Control Board, Assam Science, Technology and Environment Council, Jorhat District Aryabhatta Science Centre, Jorhat District National Children’s Science Congress, Jorhat Science Centre and Planetarium, Jorhat Environment Forum, Assam Educational Centre and SP-R. Addressing a press conference at the festival venue on Sunday, Organising Committee president Dr Bichitra Kumar Barthakur said that the Assam Science Society has undertaken various programmes to enhance students’ intellectual growth and to popularise science. He mentioned that the Jorhat branch has possibly organised the Science Festival for the first time in Assam and sought cooperation from all sections. At the press meet, moderated by Publicity Committee conveners Hemen Kumar Saikia and Abhijit Hazarika, Science Society Secretary Ramen Gogoi and Organising Committee Secretary Dandeshwar Dutta explained the progress of the festival preparations.
Among those present were Science Society adviser Dr Ramesh Chandra Barua, Assistant Secretaries Dr Prashanta Hazarika and Dhirendra Kumar Gogoi, along with Dr Bimala Prasad Barua, Rajiv Lochan Goswami, Dr Ishwar Prasad Barua, Dr Pulakjyoti Bhuyan and others. The festival flag will be hoisted by adviser Umesh Chandra Bora and president Dr Bichitra Kumar Barthakur. This will be followed by the inauguration of the science arena by MLA Hitendra Nath Goswami, while the festival will be formally inaugurated by Dr Arup Kumar Mishra, Chairman of the Assam Pollution Control Board.
The inaugural programme will be attended by District Commissioner Jay Shivani, scientist Dr Choudhury Nath Saikia and Dr Manas Pratim Barua. On the occasion, Dr Jaydeep Barua, Director of ASTEC, will release the souvenir, while Dr V M Tiwari, Director of NEIST, will inaugurate the exhibition.
The first technical session of the festival, organised by the Assam Pollution Control Board, will be conducted by its Member Secretary Dr Gautam Krishna Mishra. On the first day, science model and extempore speech competitions will be inaugurated by School Inspector Buli Gogoi Bhuyan. The cultural evening will be inaugurated by playwright Prashanta Kumar Das and sky observation will be conducted by Purabi Devi, Education Officer of the Jorhat Science Centre.
On the second day, the technical session organised by the Assam Science Society will be conducted by adviser Dr Ramesh Chandra Barua, while another technical session organised by the Central Eri and Muga Research Centre will be conducted by Dr Venkatesan Selvaraj, Director of the Tocklai Tea Research Centre. This will be followed by quiz and on-the-spot news writing competitions. The final technical session of the day, organised by the Assam Science Society, will be conducted by agricultural scientist Dr Kushal Kumar Barua. In the evening, science programmes will be presented in an entertaining format.
On the final day, the “Meet the Scientist” programme will be conducted by Mouchak Mama Shantanu Tamuli. This will be followed by a career counselling session led by Dr Prashanta Kumar Bordoloi, vice-president of the Assam Educational Centre and a robotics demonstration by Dr Dushyanta Dutta of the Jorhat Science Centre.
The valedictory function in the afternoon will be attended by Dr Nitin Kulkarni, Director of the Rainforest Research Institute and Dr Ajanta Borgohain Rajkonwar, Vice-Chancellor of Assam Women’s University.
