New Delhi, Jan 23: Trinamool Congress MP Sushmita Dev on Friday wrote to Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, raising “serious concerns” over the ongoing Special Revision of Electoral Rolls in Assam.
In her letter, Dev claimed that “huge amounts of objections” had been filed under Form-7 to delete names from the voter list, alleging that these forms were being filed in bulk and in many cases, the complainants were either untraceable or had denied filing them. She noted that the Draft Electoral Roll was published on December 27, 2025 and the Form-7 filing process ended on January 22, 2026, raising concerns about the feasibility and accuracy of the process.
Dev enclosed a public petition from Masughat Gram Panchayat under 117-Borkhola LAC, alleging that one “Mohanlal Das, Block Level Agent (a BJP activist) has filed 22 Form-7 objections, which are false,” calling it an attempt to harass genuine voters.

She highlighted that the last date for hearings and disposal of objections is February 2, 2026, with final publication scheduled for February 10, 2026. Given the high volume of objections, Dev questioned whether notices could be served in person by BLOs across Assam and hearings held within the tight timeline, citing figures from several LACs, including 15,304 objections in 118-Silchar, 9,671 in 116-Katigorah and 10,249 in 38-Barkhetri LAC.
Criticising the Special Revision process as “hurried” and “extremely haphazard,” she urged the Election Commission to extend the hearing period by seven days to ensure all individuals can defend their right to vote.
Dev also referenced the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam, pointing out that the NRC exercise, which took over six years has not been fully notified and questioned why NRC data was disregarded in updating the voter list. She demanded that the Election Commission correlate the NRC with the voter list to ensure names found in the NRC are retained and noted that 19 lakh individuals excluded from the NRC currently have no legal remedy to challenge their status.
“The Supreme Court has clearly stated that until the final NRC list is notified, no regressive measures can be taken against any person excluded,” she concluded. (PTI)
