Dibrugarh, Feb 01: Honchun Ngandam, MLA and Advisor to the Minister for PWD, has issued an appeal to the Wancho tribe in the Tirap, Changlang, and Longding (TCL) region to move away from the traditional practice of jhum (shifting) cultivation.
Addressing the general public, Ngandam emphasised the need for a gradual transition toward modern, eco-friendly agricultural practices to ensure environmental conservation and long-term economic stability. He highlighted that the Government of Arunachal Pradesh, led by Chief Minister Pema Khandu, is committed to providing sustainable alternatives.
Through the Agriculture and Horticulture Departments, the state is strengthening schemes for high-value crops such as tea, ginger, and tamul (betel nut). These permanent cultivation methods are designed to replace the soil-depleting cycles of shifting cultivation, offering the community more reliable income streams.
Ngandam urged the community to adopt modern farming techniques that preserve the state’s rich biodiversity. He also made an appeal to air gun users to cease the hunting of wildlife.
He stressed that protecting the region’s fauna is as vital as preserving its flora, noting that the ecological health of the TCL region depends on an immediate end to poaching.
By shifting from traditional hunting and jhum practices to conservation-led livelihoods, Ngandam believes the Wancho community can lead the way in Arunachal’s green revolution.
