Former Bodo Sahitya Sabha president Toren Chandra Boro passes away

Assam mourns the loss of a literary stalwart and promoter of Bodo language

KOKRAJHAR, Feb 14: Eminent literary figure and former president of the Bodo Sahitya Sabha (2017–2023), Toren Chandra Boro, passed away on Saturday afternoon in Guwahati.

A noted writer and respected personality, Boro was known for his lifelong work in promoting Bodo language and literature, both within the Bodo community and across Assam. He also served as the Convener of the Sahitya Akademi Bodo Advisory Board.

According to family sources, he was taken to Wintrobe Hospital, Ambari, Guwahati, after a sudden drop in his blood sugar level, where he was declared dead. He was about 70 and is survived by his wife, two daughters and a son.

Born in 1955 in Kokrajhar, Boro completed his graduate and postgraduate studies from Gauhati University and retired as a Manager at the State Bank of India, Guwahati. Throughout his life, he was actively involved in social and literary activities and made significant contributions to the development of Bodo language and literature. He authored numerous books in Bodo and Assamese and wrote several Bodo-language dramas. He was also a well-known public speaker.

Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed deep sorrow over Boro’s demise. In a condolence message shared on social media, he described Boro as a prominent literary personality whose contributions to Bodo and Assamese society would be remembered for generations. He also highlighted Boro’s role as convener of the Bodo Language Advisory Committee of the Sahitya Akademi, acknowledging his efforts in promoting the Bodo language nationally. Remembering him as a calm and simple-minded person, the Chief Minister prayed for peace to the departed soul and extended condolences to his family.

Condolences have poured in from literary bodies, student organisations, political parties and cultural groups across the state. Various social organisations and student bodies, including the Bodo Sahitya Sabha and the All Bodo Students Union, along with BTC chief Hagrama Mohilary and former CEM of BTR and UPPL president Pramod Boro, expressed deep mourning.

Pramod Boro stated that the Bodo community, as well as the entire state, lost a significant literary figure with Toren Chandra Boro’s demise. “Your immense contribution and unparalleled services shall be remembered. Bodo language and literature took a giant leap towards progress during your tenure as president of Bodo Sahitya Sabha”, he added.

Our Tezpur Correspondent adds: The Asam Sahitya Sabha has expressed deep sorrow over the demise of eminent litterateur, organiser, writer and researcher Taren Chandra Boro, former president of the Bodo Sahitya Sabha and Convener of the Bodo Language Advisory Council of the Sahitya Akademi.

In a condolence message, Asam Sahitya Sabha president Dr Basanta Kumar Goswami, vice-president Padum Rajkhowa and principal secretary Debajit Bora said that Boro’s death was an irreparable loss to the literary, cultural and social life of Assam. “Through his lifelong work, he not only strengthened the Bodo Sahitya Sabha but also contributed significantly to the consolidation of the broader Assamese identity,” the message stated. The dignitaries prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed their heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family. As a mark of respect, the flag at the Asam Sahitya Sabha’s central office in Jorhat, along with all regional and district offices of the Sabha will be flown at half-mast on February 15.
