Karbi Anglong gears up for Assembly polls; voting on April 9

DIPHU, March 17: Following the announcement of the election schedule by the Election Commission of India, the district administration of Karbi Anglong has initiated preparations for the forthcoming Assam Legislative Assembly Election 2026, with polling to be held in a single phase on April 9.

District Commissioner and District Election Officer Aranyak Saikia announced the schedule for the 110-Diphu (ST), 109-Howraghat (ST) and 108-Bokajan Assembly constituencies during a press conference at the DC Conference Hall in Diphu.

According to the schedule, the last date for filing nominations is March 23, scrutiny will take place on March 24, and the final date for withdrawal of candidature is March 26.

Counting of votes will be held on May 4.

Saikia informed that a total of 5,30,365 voters are expected to cast their votes across 690 polling stations in the district, of which three have been designated as model polling stations.

Webcasting facilities will be available at all polling stations, while 60 polling stations will be managed entirely by women.

He added that voting percentage updates will be uploaded in real time on the ECI portal.

To ensure smooth conduct of the elections, micro-observers and general observers have been deployed, while checking of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) is currently underway.

Booth committees will be allowed to set up beyond a 100-metre radius from polling stations.

With the Model Code of Conduct already in force, the District Commissioner directed political parties to remove posters, banners and hoardings from government properties within 48 hours and from private properties within 72 hours.

Flying squads have also been constituted to monitor violations.

Saikia further stated that more than 10,000 first-time voters in the 18–19 age group have been registered in the district.

Four companies of the CRPF have already been deployed in Diphu to ensure peaceful polling.
