SKM’s Tshering Palden Bhutia new Gangtok Mayor

GANGTOK, May 2: Newly elected councillors of Gangtok Municipal Corporation (GMC) on Saturday elected Sikkim Krantikari Morcha’s (SKM) Tshering Palden Bhutia as Mayor and Sara Lama as Deputy Mayor of the municipal body.

Earlier in the day, the Gangtok District Magistrate administered the oath of office and secrecy to the newly elected councillors of GMC.

The municipal elections were held on April 24 and the results were declared on April 4. The opposition parties had boycotted the elections.

In the 21-ward Gangtok Municipal Corporation, the SKM has 19 councillors.

Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, in a congratulatory message, noted that the electoral mandate reflects public trust and places a significant responsibility on the representatives to deliver effective governance. He emphasised the importance of transparency, accountability and people-centric policies in addressing urban challenges.

The public representatives were also urged to prioritise infrastructure development, sanitation and sustainable urban growth, while working collaboratively with stakeholders.

“Your role will be central to shaping inclusive and resilient urban communities across the state,” said Tamang.

The CM wished all representatives success in their tenure and expressed confidence that their leadership will contribute to the overall progress and well-being of citizens.

In the Namchi Municipal Council, Ganesh Rai and Saraswati Sharma were elected chairperson and vice chairperson by the newly elected councillors. (PTI)
