TEZPUR, May 10: A meeting regarding the operationalisation of the newly constructed slaughter house at Barika Chuburi, Tezpur was held on Friday at the Conference Hall of the District Commissioner’s Office, Sonitpur under the chairmanship of District Commissioner Ananda Kumar Das.
The meeting was attended by District Development Commissioner Sanjeev Kumar Sharma, Chairperson of Tezpur Municipal Board Ramen Tamuli, Vice Chairperson of Tezpur Municipal Board Sangita Ghose Bose, ward commissioners of Tezpur Municipal Board, Executive Officer of Tezpur Municipal Board, officials from the District Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Department, representatives of civil society organisations, butchers of the Tezpur Municipal area and other stakeholders.
During the meeting, Panjal Borthakur of Assam Hill Fresh delivered a detailed presentation by Assam Livestock And Poultry Corporation (ALPCo) Ltd, highlighting the importance of scientifically managed slaughter houses and hygienically processed meat for ensuring public health, food safety and animal welfare. He elaborated on the need for ante-mortem and post-mortem inspection of animals by qualified veterinary doctors and stressed compliance with prescribed food safety and municipal regulations. He also requested cooperation from the district administration, stating that veterinary doctors would be deputed by the concerned department for regular inspection and certification processes.
The presentation further highlighted how a modern slaughter house facility would help ensure clean and safe meat supply, scientific waste management, reduction of contamination and better regulation of meat trade practices. The new facility has been designed with provisions for hygienic slaughtering, meat inspection, chilling, storage and proper disposal systems in accordance with prescribed standards. It was informed during the meeting that the slaughter house is tentatively scheduled to become operational from June 1, 2026.
Addressing the meeting, the District Commissioner urged all butchers of the Tezpur Municipal area to avail the government facility and strictly abide by the prescribed directions and guidelines in the interest of public health and supply of quality, scientifically slaughtered meat to consumers. He further directed the Executive Officer of Tezpur Municipal Board to closely monitor any violations of government and municipal directives related to slaughtering and meat sale practices.
The meeting concluded with detailed discussions and suggestions from stakeholders regarding the smooth implementation and operation of the facility.
