SIVASAGAR, Oct 6: Gone are those days when horses were the only mode of communication and transportation of goods from one place to another even in our rural areas. Horses enjoyed the care and love from humans once. There is a place in Sivasagar town called Melachakar – the place where horses were let loose by the traders for rest and food after carrying goods from Desangmukh and other ghats along the Brahmaputra. But things changed rapidly with time and they are about to lose their place in human society. Owners, who traditionally kept horses, now let them go away as there are no buyers. The fate of these faithful servants of mankind now rests with a handful of animal lovers. Two such feral horses, roaming the streets of Sivasagar town for over two months, were rescued by the Veterinary department on October 2 and were handed over to ‘Aranyam’ – an NGO set up by an animal lover, Samiran Hatimuria of Kalugaon.
Two other horses died recently after feeding on the leftover rotten foods in dustbins. The veterinary doctors provided them necessary treatment before sending them to the NGO.
Samiran Hatimuria, the director of the NGO, said that the horses are in good spirits and could easily mix- up with six other horses in the mini zoo of the NGO.
